Forhøyede basofile varsler at det er trolig
dreier seg om en patologisk prøve, og mik-
roskopi kan avsløre om basofilien er reell og
om det er andre tegn til myeloproliferativ
sykdom.

Pseudobasofili kan sees ved reaktive lym-
focytter, abnormale lymfocytter og andre
patologiske celler som vanligvis ikke er til
stede i blod.

Reell basofili er vanlig ved myeloproliferativ
sykdom, særlig ved kronisk myelogen leu-
kemi der basofili ofte er første manifestasjon.
