transfer of information, environmental disturbances,
patient rest prior to sampling, and unclear guidelines
must be changed on a higher level of organization
than by an educational program for VBS personnel
on the health care frontline. Further studies are also
needed on how work place culture influence VBS
practices.
Clinical relevance
Our results indicate that monitoring and counte-
racting the near misses in VBS practices is a well-
functioning preventive action.
We propose
that the
VBS monitoring instruments (VBS questionnaire
& haemolysis index) we used and the educational
intervention program strategy proposed should be
tested in
additional
countries with different health-
care settings. It is suggested that a n
ational program
intended to identify near misses and prevent VBS
errors should be developed in the healthcare system.

programs
may
be cheaper than,
and as effective as, the educational intervention
program and may be performed everywhere and any
time. S
ystematic planning, allowing time for reflec-
tion and focus on specific elements of a practice skill
together with increased use of guidelines, could pro-
bably increase practice improvements. Our studies
have led to deeper and extended knowledge of the
impact of an educational intervention program on
VBS practices. Our results can be used when consi-
dering future VBS practice interventions.
