Klinisk Biokemi i Norden
meeting in Montreal on October 21
st
, 2009. The
American Diabetes Association (ADA), the Euro-
pean Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD),
the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the
IFCC and the International Society for Pediatric and
Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) were represented at
the meeting, as well as some editors from medical
journals. The statements approved in the meeting
were similar to those approved in the first statement
including the standardization of HbA
1c
test results
worldwide, including the reference system and results
reporting and that the IFCC reference system for
HbA
1c
represents the only valid anchor to implement
standardization of the measurement. HbA
1c
results
should be reported by clinical laboratories worldwide
in SI units (mmol/mol – no decimals) and derived
NGSP units (% - one decimal), using the IFCC-NGSP
master equation (DCCT units). They also agreed that
HbA
1c
conversion tables including both SI (IFCC)
and NGSP units should be easily accessible for the
diabetes community. Journals are strongly recom-
mended to require that submitted manuscripts report
HbA
1c
in both SI (IFCC) and NGSP/DCCT units.
This consensus statement will be discussed at the
next consensus meeting at the IDF meeting in Dubai
December 2011. It is noteworthy that there is no
mention of the average blood glucose in this consen-
sus statement.
Many countries have already implemented the new
unit and the new IFCC standard or the implementa-
tion process is on-going.
The major IFCC event in 2010 is the General
Conference which will be held on April 16-19, in
Corfu, Greece. All IFCC functional units will have
their meetings during the General Conference. The
National Representatives and the Presidents of the
Full Member Societies, the representatives of the
Corporate Members and the Affiliate Members are
invited to this meeting. Also EFCC has several mee-
tings in Corfu. I am sure we will have an excellent and
interesting gathering in the beautiful island of Corfu.
I ask you to mark the events of the 2011 in your
calenders. The next Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Con-
ference will be held in Paris on February 26-27, 2011
and the title of the conference is Pregnancy-related
Disorders: Present Perspectives and Emerging Chal-
lenges. The information on this conference is avai-
lable on the IFCC website. And of course ICCCLM
Berlin is on May 15-20, 2011. (www.ifcc.org )
