The Department of Biomedical Science
The study of Biomedical Science is a new department
at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Iceland.
Many changes have been made in the organization of
the BS undergraduate programme at the Department
as well as innovations like offering a masters pro-
gramme in biomedical science. From the beginning,
admission of new students in the BS undergradu-
ate programme has been capped to 20 after the first
semester. Although the number of students who have
applied for admission every year has been a round 25
– 35,
the number of students continuing studies after
the first year in the faculty has not been satisfactory.
To solve this problem the Department of Biomedical
Science seeks to strengthen both the undergraduate
and the postgraduate programmes.
The Department of Biomedical Science aims to
be excellent teaching and research department at the
University of Iceland in the future and train biomedi-
cal scientists who are capable of working in all kinds
of laboratories in Iceland.
