chemistry at the Landspitali University Hospital, and
concludes with a final written examination (3 hours),
validity of 100%.
The course of methodology in clinical chemistry
The course of methodology in clinical chemistry
includes lectures (68) and laboratory exercises (232
hours). The curriculum of the lectures is funda-
mentals factors in the process of analytical measure-
ments in clinical chemistry. Topics are, for examples,
calibrations and maintenance of instruments, refer-
ence intervals, laboratory automation, evaluation of
methods, interferences in chemical analysis, point of
care testing, and quality assurance systems in clinical
chemistry laboratories. Furthermore students will
learn about standard procedures of blood sample col-
lection technique, sample transport, and preservation
of blood samples in clinical chemistry laboratories.
In the laboratory exercises (projects) students per-
form methods which are used in the quantitative
analysis of chemical components of blood and other
body fluids. The majority of the exercises takes
place at the University of Iceland (one exercise per
week (13 weeks)) and at the Landspitali University
Hospital (two weeks and three days). The labora-
tory exercises (15) consist, amongst other things, of
calibrations of instruments, measurements of vari-
ous analytics of chemical components of blood and
urine using photo spectral technique and wet and dry
chemistry techniques, measurements of drugs using
chromatographic technique (High pressure liquid
chromatography, HPLC) and lateral flow chromato-
graphic immunoassays technique, measurements of
hormones using ELISA (Enzyme-linked immuno-
sorbent assay) technique, and quantitative analysis of
serum proteins.
Students perform the laboratory exercises, which
are obligatory, in groups (1-3 students) and must
deliver a lab report after each exercise. Each student
also has to do an essay (10 pages) about comparison
of two analytical methods and give a lecture about it.
