tions, encouraging and motivating them to implement
its recommendations.
Section and Divisions
The various Specialist Sections represent the inte-
rests of their particular Specialty. A new Specialist
Section is created if at least 1/3 of the member states
recognise it as an independent specialty. Each dele-
gation to a Section shall consist of 2 delegates from
each member country of the UEMS nominated by
their medical association. A Section may create one
or more divisions under the responsibility of the main
Section, which forms an integral part of its practice,
and involves a recognised higher training program.
Key activities carried out are:
• Postgraduate training
• Continuing medical education and professional
training
• Quality assurance in medical practice
Our Section of Laboratory Medicine
Laboratory Medicine includes five subdivisions; general
laboratory medicine, haematology and transfusionmed-
icine, immunology, clinical chemistry, and genetics. Our
section holds two meetings each year, and at these mee-
tings on average around 20 countries are represented.
What are we currently working on?
Our focus is on the education of physicians in the
laboratory. The aim is to harmonize the European
specialisation so that doctors in the future can work
in different countries within the EU without issues.
We have written and published a Blue Book where we
describe the minimum quality standard for a medical
professional to become a specialist. Since this goal is
not yet reached we have a “Fellowship of the European
Board of Laboratory Medicine/Medical Biopathology”
that can be applied for. If a laboratory would like to have
an official visitation, to investigate whether a laboratory
is of high enough quality to educate doctors to become
specialists in laboratory medicine we can supply them
with knowledgeable inspectors.
