Nordie Course to be heldinReykjavik, September 23-29, 1998.
Topics: Review of the role of the clinical biochernistry laboratory in oncology. Special emphasis will
beon integrationofnovel insights incancerbiologywithmore traditional methods. Thecourse consists
of lectures, laboratory demonstrations and group discussion. Materials covered include molecular
genetics of cancer i.e.,DNA repair defects and genorne instability. Famihal cancer syndromes will be
reviewedwith focus on laboratoryworkup in risk assessment, diagnosis andmonitoring of treatment.
Wewill addresskey issues of current interest to theelinieal biochernist such as comparisonofbiochernical
andmolecular genetic tests with other diagnosticmodalities andwhy clinicians and patients consider
turnor markers to be terrormarkers?
The leetures will be held in themorning, with informal discussions, demonstrations, and practical
laboratory experience in the aftemoon. The language will be English.
