ogy diagnostics. We expect inspiring talks entitled
“Digital microscopy and diagnostics supported by
artificial intelligence” by prof. Johan Lundin, Institute
of Molecular Medicine Finland and “Next generation
sequencing in hematology: current status and future
visions” by prof. Richard Rosenquist Brandell, Kar-
olinska Institutet. Application of Mass Cytometry
(CyTOF) in hematology will also be discussed.

Workshop on Publication Ethics
& ScientificWriting:
This workshop led by professors
Thomas A. Annesley, University of Michigan, Ann
Arbor, MI, USA and Nader Rifai, Boston Children’s
Hospital & Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA,
USA has been very popular in several EuroMedLab
meetings and NFKK2012 in Reykjavik, Iceland. The
Workshop is divided into Ethical conduct and mis-
conduct in the publication process (40 min), Guide to
scientific writing: how to organize your manuscript,
present your data, and respond to reviewers’ com-
ments (50 min) and Interactive discussion (30 min).
During this workshop, the roles of editors, authors
and reviewers in assuring the scientific integrity of
the publication process will be discussed. The impli-
cations of egregious transgressions (fraud, plagiarism,
and data fabrication) and bad practices (duplicate
and redundant publications) will be addressed. The
workshop will also cover ways to maximize the clar-
ity and consistency of a scientific paper. Examples of
both effective and ineffective titles, abstracts, results
and figures will be used to highlight ways to improve
your chances of success.
Laboratory and the Silent Liver Disease Session:
With epidemic levels of obesity, diabetes and excess
alcohol consumption in current societies, doctors
are encountering never before seen record numbers
of abnormal liver function tests, which may indicate
silent fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver
disease (NAFLD) is now the most common cause
of chronic liver disease especially in children and
adolescents due to obesity, insulin resistance, and
metabolic syndrome. Alcohol consumption is another
highly common cause of compromised liver func-
tion, which in individuals with excess body weight
may also lead to additive hepatotoxic effects. This
symposium will discuss the clinical implications of
excess liver fat and its associations with metabolic
syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular morbidity.
Topics include recent advances in the diagnostic tests
of liver function and the differential diagnosis of
alcoholic versus non-alcoholic liver disease. With no
approved pharmacological treatments, lifestyle and
dietary therapies remain the only hope for reversing
the course of the disease. Recent experiences from
clinical studies on the role of behaviour change and
monitoring such treatment with laboratory tests
will be discussed. The invited speakers are profes-
sors Hannele Yki-Järvinen, University of Helsinki,
Onni Niemelä, University of Tampere, and Markku
Savolainen, University of Oulu, Finland and Anders
Helander, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.
