The XXXIVth Nordic Congress
in Clinical Chemistry
Göteborg, Sweden, September 16th -19th, 2014
Ola Hammarsten, Chairman of the Scientific Committee
One of the highlights of our
Nordic cooperation is the Nordic
Congress in Clinical Chemistry.
The Swedish Society for Clini-
cal Biochemistry and Laboratory
Medicine is honored to host this
congress in 2014. The congress
will take place on September 16th
-19th, 2014 in Göteborg, Sweden.
The scientific committee involves a broad range of
knowledge and is planning an exciting agenda with
the overall theme
“Future opportunities in clinical
chemistry”
.
This entails a section on new aspects of metabolism
and disease where among others Professor Fredrik
Bäckhed from the Sahlgrenska Academy at Univer-
sity of Gothenburg will open our minds towards the
influence of the gut microflora and our health.
Symposia will also illuminate novel biomarkers
and novel technology in diagnosis of neurodegene-
rative disease, heart disease, hematological diseases
and cancer.
A main focus will be emerging techniques. Fredrik
Höök Professor in Biological Physics from Chalmers
university of Technology will describe the develop-
ment new sensors for single molecule detection. The
technology-oriented seminars will also discuss next
generation sequencing and its practical implications
in future diagnostics. The scientific committee has
selected companies with interesting technologies to
a dedicated trade exhibition to make us familiar with
the actual technological forefront.
With our increased ability to measure with these
new technologies we also need ways to evaluate bio-
markers contribution in the diagnostic process. A
separate seminar will discuss “why are there so few
new biomarkes”. On this note Heli Salminen-Manko-
nen from Turku Centre for Biotechnology, Åbo will
discuss the science of biobanking. In addition, seve-
ral speakers with hands-on knowledge in biomarker
development have been invited.
The clinical laboratory is an exciting collabora-
tion between physicians, laboratory technicians and
chemists. The meeting will therefore also illustrate
good examples of how we can optimize our interac-
tion with each other and with clinical partners as
well as aspects of the challenges in future education
of physicians, laboratory technicians/scientists and
chemists
