Two
Roche/Hitachi Modular PP800 instru-
ments (6.)
are connected on-line with the transport
system. The samples are automatically loaded to
Hitachi racks and transferred inside the instru-
ment. Analysed samples are transferred back to
the track. At exit, the results of individual samples
are checked with an autovalidation program. The
results that meet the validation criteria (ca. 80% of
all results) are released and sent to the requester,
while the remaining results are transferred to manu-
al validation. The validation process has previously
been described in detail in this journal (Suvisaari
et. al, 2005).
Two
Abbott Architecht immuno-analysers (9.)
are connected on-line. The connection is simple,
while the sample is preserved on the track and fixed
to a precise position so that it can be reach by the
probe of the instrument.
Hematology
The solution for blood cell counting has been stan-
dalone automation: Sysmex HST with three XE-
2100 instruments and a slide maker. Little benefit is
gained by including haematology to total automa-
tion – most of the benefits are achieved with stan-
dalone solutions. Samples are easily sorted already
at sampling, minimal preanalytical procedures are
required and the high number of tubes (>2000 tubes
daily) might risk the capacity of the automated
preanalytics
Monthly production in the central laboratory
There has been a long lasting consolidation proc-
ess in the laboratories at the Helsinki region. Due
to this consolidation the production of the central
laboratory has increased year after year. Year 2004
the production exceeded 5 million tests. While the
production has increased to 4 fold, the number of
personnel has increased minimally and is today
around 30.
