sina pengar. För sin investering. Då kan han sälja ut.
Kapten Rosbach beklagar att han numera inte hål-
ler i rodret så ofta. Det är helt andra uppgifter som
skall lösas i en allt tätare tidtabell. Papper och webfor-
mulär. Men att segla en skuta, att styra ett skepp, på
död räkning genom dimmiga sund, med intuitionen,
erfarenheten och ett par vaksamma ögon som enda
hjälpmedel är det inte längre. Inte mycket at klaga över,
summerar kapten Rosbach, sådan är utvecklingen.
Men det är inte lika roligt längre.
Trots det, avslutar han med ett leende, är det fort-
farande världens bästa jobb.

Alpha1-antitrypsin:
Meeting to commemorate 50 years of research
On September 26-27 Malmö will celebrate 50 years
of exciting scientific developments and their clinical
consequences following the discovery of alpha1-
antitrypsin deficiency.
A newly appointed physician at the Eksjö Sanato-
rium in Småland noted that some of his patients lacked
typical tuberculosis symptoms and sent 2 samples
within a few weeks to Professor Carl-Bertil Laurell
in Malmö. This was the start of improved electrop-
horesis in agarose gels, family and population studies
(Sten Eriksson), iso-electric focusing (Magne Fagerhol
and Jan-Olof Jeppsson), protein purification (C-B L),
understanding of protease/antiprotease balance (Kjell
Ohlsson), X-Ray crystallography (Robert Huber), the
world’s first national neonatal population screening for
a genetic disease (Tomas Sveger) and creation of the
Serpin concept (Robin Carrell).
Creation of transgenic mice expressing normal
(PiM) and the deficiency (PiZ) variant (Joyce Carlson,
Savio Woo) was soon followed by Tracy, the transge-
nic lamb, producing human AAT in her milk, and an
important inspiration for the subsequent creation of
Dolly and herds of genetically engineered sheep on the
Pharm outside of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Now, 50 years after the first publication, many of
the pioneers listed above, and our clinical colleagues
within pulmonary medicine, hepatology and pedia-
trics will reminisce on scientific discoveries and their
importance for the latest clinical developments and
current therapeutic State of the Art.
