Klinisk Biokemi i Norden
On behalf of the Organising Committee we cordially
invite you to the XXXIII Nordic Congress in Clinical
Chemistry that will be held on the 12th - 15th June,
2012 at Hilton Reykjavík Nordica Hotel, Reykjavik.
Our scientific committee is planning an ambitious
and interesting program that will cover the forefront
of science as well as current developments in the
practice of clinical chemistry and laboratory medi-
cine. Details of the programme will be published on
the website of the conference (www.nfkk2012.is) as it
develops. Beside plenary lectures and other presenta-
tions, posters will be on display in the congress hall.
Also, a trade exhibition will take place at the congress
venue throughout.
The first circular for the congress pictures the
arctic tern, a relatively small but one of the most
determined of all birds. Of all migratory birds that
come to Iceland in the spring, the arctic tern travels
the longest distance. Even though it is small it is still
able to accomplish the remarkable feat of migrating
over 35,000 km each year —all the way from Antar-
ctica. In fact, this small bird travels longer distances
than any other animal on earth and it is known to be
in daylight more than dark because of its migration
schedule.
Just like the artic tren, the small Icelandic Society
for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine is
determined to make the XXXIII Nordic Congress in
Clinical Chemistry a success in all aspects.
Internationally, Iceland has been in focus due to
the financial crisis hitting its inhabitants hardly and
also because of the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier
and the effects of the volcanic ash on air traffic. At
present the icelandic economy is step by step recove-
ring and gaining strenght. The eruption was certainly
a catastrophic event for those living near the glacer,
but most Icelanders carried on with their normal
daily life. Cohabitation with volcanos and numerous
other potential hazards of nature has been accepted
as a fact of life and for many exciting. The general
attitude is that there is little point in worrying over
unpredictable forces of nature.
Instead of worring over what harm the Icelandic
nature can give rise to we encourage the participants
of the congress in Iceland not only to enjoy the city
of Reykjavik but to make the most out of their trip
to Iceland and visit attractions such as Thingvel-
lir, Gullfoss, Geysir, Landmannalaugar, Vestman-
nöarna, Skaftafell, Myvatn, Akureyri, Stykkisholmur
and the uninhabited areas of the Westfjords and the
Icelandicinterior. Other activities to be recommended
are whale watching, deep sea fishing, horse riding,
river rafting, glacier hiking, snowmobile and jeep
tours and mountain hiking.
Hope to see you in Reykjavik!
Isleifur Olafsson
