and Affiliate Member Societies as well as Corporate
Members. We heard reports of the IFCC President
given by the Past President, Division Chairs, Treas-
urer and Corporate Members. Regional Presidents
and the Chairs of Task Forces gave also their reports.
The second day of the Conference was reserved for
interactive workshops of different IFCC projects
(Public relations, Making best use of young scientists,
Improving communication within IFCC, Environ-
mental responsibility in laboratory medicine, Educat-
tion and training in laboratory medicine, Getting the
best out of conferences, Ethics, Supporting laboratory
medicine in the developing world, Reporting HbA1c,
Acute and chronic kidney disease, Pharmacogenom-
ics, Point of care testing, Promoting evidence--based
practice, Setting standards in laboratory medicine,
Promoting preventive medicine, Paediatric labora-
tory medicine). These all are important topics and the
participants attended all these sessions actively. The
final session was IFCC Presidents presentation on
the future of IFCC. I gave this on Graham Beastall’s
behalf. There were several important issues in this
presentation which IFCC President has addressed in
his letter to the National Societies on July 2010. The
first issue is the Membership of IFCC. Several years
ago the IFCC changed its name to incorporate ‘and
Laboratory Medicine’. The obvious way to broaden
the activities and influence of IFCC is to allow mem-
bership from societies and professional bodies that
have expertise in areas of laboratory medicine other
than clinical chemistry. With the change of name
it was hoped areas of laboratory medicine outside
IFCC’s traditional area of clinical chemistry would
join the Federation. However, this has not been
achieved. One of the major barriers to broaden the
membership to has been the current membership
rules for IFCC, which limit Full Membership to one
national society per country.
Another issue Graham Beastall wanted to address
to the Membership was the composition of and elec-
tion of the IFCC Executive Board. Presently each
EB members can serve two three-year terms. Major
points of discussion are to change the Vice-Presi-
dent’s position into President-Elect and restricting
Nordic interference on IFCC operations
