Klinisk Biokemi i Norden
“The Arctic Experience”
Course in Scientific Writing and Publishing
January 29 – February 1 2008
Finse 1222, Norway
Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory
Investigation (SJCLI) and Nordic Society of Clinical
Chemistry (NFKK) hereby invite colleagues from the
Scandinavian countries to participate in an exten-
sive course in scientific writing and publishing. The
Editorial Board of SJCLI (ten Editors) will be respon-
sible for the programme, as well as giving most of
the lectures.
The aim of the course is to increase the awareness
of the participants of the importance of scientific
writing and to train them in writing a scientific
manuscript.
The course will deal with the publication process
from the perspective of both the author and the
editor, focussing on
• how to submit manuscript
• how to select the most appropriate Journal
• authorship
• the science citation index
• impact factor
• the peer-review system
• the handling of submitted manuscripts by the
Journal
• editorship
• the structure of a scientific manuscript
• use of graphics and tables
• search for literature and citations
• presentation of statistics
• scientific fraud
The course will be organized in both structured lectu-
res and in groups of participants writing a scientific
manuscript based on given data and literature.
The course and housing will be in Finse, located
at the southernmost part of Europe with an arctic
climate. Finse is 1222 meter above the see level and
only accessible by train from either Bergen or Oslo
(www.finse1222.no and www.finse.com)
This remote location has been selected in order to
find the necessary calm and tranquillity for maximal
focus on the activities during the course as well as for
team-building and net-work forming. Additionally,
the participants will have the unique opportunity for
great adventures and dramatic experiences in one of
the most wild and beautiful parts of the Norwegian
mountains, especially in winter time. It is probably
not to exaggerate that this may be an once-in-a-
lifetime experience for many participants.
The course is open for Scandinavian/Nordic col-
leagues within the field of medical biochemistry/
clinical biochemistry/clinical chemistry primarily for
those in postgraduate specialist training, but seniors
may also apply.
The maximum numbers of participants is 20. The
official language is English or a language understan-
dable for all participants.
The course will be fully financed by SJCLI and
NFKK.
