Klinisk Biokemi i Norden
• To transcend the boundaries of a single nation or
a single corporation, or a geographical, cultural or
linguistic group of nations in developing the field of
Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine
• To provide a forum for standardisation, in the broa-
dest sense, at a high level
• To disseminate information on "best practice" at
various levels of technology and of economic deve-
lopment
• To promote a vision of Clinical Chemistry and
Laboratory Medicine that extends beyond traditio-
nal narrow perceptions of the field.
IFCC achieves these aims by publishing information
and guidelines relating to the education of clini-
cal chemists and laboratory physicians, by defining
principles and publishing recommendations for the
standardisation of analytical procedures and for the
interpretation of analytical results , and by promoting
meetings of clinical chemists and laboratory scien-
tists through congresses, symposia and workshops in
Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, and by
encouraging dialogues with clinicians on matters of
common interest.
The principal objectives of the strategic plan are
• To improve and maintain the multidisciplinary and
international leadership of IFCC in standardisation
activities.
• To ensure that its standardisation and research acti-
vities are more oriented towards the patient and
towards the health of the individual.
• To ensure consistency between its activities and the
stated expectations of the IFCC members, recogni-
sing the needs of both developed and developing
countries.
• To develop and maintain IFCC communications,
to promote publications and products from IFCC,
including publications and reference materials, and
to set up joint promotion activities with inter-
national organisations such as WHO, WASPaLM,
IUPAC, IRMM, CLSI and others.
• To establish collaborations, joint meetings and
projects with international organisations having
interest in the field of Laboratory Medicine such as
IUPAC, ISTH, IATDM, IRMM, CLSI.
• To promote IFCC through international and regio-
nal congresses.
• To promote Members' activities.
• To encourage professional development of indivi-
duals in National Societies and the recruitment of
new members and experts to IFCC operating units.
• To develop and maintain Public Relations.
Each new IFCC Executive Board revisits and inter-
prets these principal objectives so that they are fresh
and relevant to current issues, challenges and opp-
ortunities. The present Executive Board has outli-
ned 25 different objectives for the on-going term
of office, which is a great and ambitious challenge
for us, but I am sure we can accomplish all of them.
The Executive Board has had three meetings
during the year the first one being on March in
Windsor, and the second one was held during the
EuroMedLab in Innsbruck. The last meeting was
held in mid-November in Milano. The last mee-
ting of the year is always a budget meeting where
also Division Chairs are present. They give their
reports of the past year’s activities of their Divisions
as well as the budget proposals for the next year.
The Executive Board then discusses the reports and
the proposals and makes the final decision. The
budget discussion for the year 2010 was very chal-
lenging because of the present financial situation
and the losses in IFCC investments. Year 2010 is
also a year when there is no IFCC congress so no
major income from congress is to be expected that
year. The Executive Board approved the budget with
some concern and realizing that we have to keep
supporting the important work of different Com-
mittees and Working Groups. The Executive Board
itself plans to cut down its expenses by having only
two meetings in 2010.
The major IFCC event in 2010 is the General
Conference which will be held on April 16-19, in
Corfu, Greece. The information on this event which
is intended for the National Representatives and
the Presidents of the Full Member Societies, the
representatives of the Corporate Members and the
Affiliate Members is available on the IFCC website.
Also most of the IFCC functional units have their
meetings during the General Conference.
We also need to mark the events of the 2011 in
our calenders. The next Ortho Clinical Diagnostics
Conference will be held in Paris on February 26-27,
2011. The information on this conference is availa-
ble on the IFCC website. And of course ICCCLM
Berlin is on May 15-20, 2011. (www.ifcc.org)
